Children from low income families in need of orthodontic treatment could qualify for free dental work through the Smiles 4 Canada Program. Orthodontists in Canada are volunteering their time to provide diagnosis and treatment for patients at no cost. To be eligible, families must meet the approved financial criteria and applicants must be under the age of 14. Children are asked to submit a written letter explaining why they are applying to the program they must also provide a references letter , a dental evaluation and photographs of their teeth. A regional committee will review all application for the program. Although treatment is free for successful applicants there is a $500 administration fee. The clinic permits dental students to gain experience treating patients, while providing dental care to the public at a reduced cost. The students offer low-cost cleanings, restorations, x-rays and denture services. Patients who do not speak English are encouraged to bring a friend or family member to each appointment to translate information.
